Backup everything: Plan and action

A personal reminder and a documentation of how I back(ed) up everything. This is a work-in-progress document.

General steps

1. Sight everything you want to back up

  • Old / current / new computers
  • Old / current / new hard drives
  • Old / current / new SD cards
  • Offline data
  • Online data (your website, stuff you put on social media)
  • (Maybe also digitizing analog data like vinyl records, tapes or CDs to prevent them from being destroyed or trashed)

A for-profit company needs the human glue (until it doesn’t)

Every for-profit company aims for profit but needs glue so people stick to the company. At each point of contact, there is glue, whether it’s a flesh-and-bones employee or a system that emulates an employee.

Keep in mind: If a for-profit could make the same amount of money without human employees, it would do so. Get used to the idea that if such a company can replace you, it will replace you.

A company is not its boss. A company is its own system that (if for-profit) lives from profit. If a sub-system can feed the company at the same profit level as an employee, you will be replaced by this sub-system.

In fact, this famous scene in Forrest Gump is a metaphor for dealing with a writer’s block. Sean mentioned a lot that you write to find out what you want to write about“. Forrest was blocked in the legs and released the block by moving the legs.
